They have keen hearing and great hearing and smelling senses. Although brown bears are alert both day and night, they frequently change their routines in regions with a lot of human activity in order to avoid people.  Grizzly bears will sleep in beds of dense vegetation, such as willows, alders, dense forests, and tall grass, during the hottest part of the day. Except for either breeding or rearing offspring, brown bears spend most of their time alone. We get an opportunity to see just how curious they are when one person is filming as their car approaches a grizzly standing on its hind legs. The fluffy bear is standing still, next to a stopped car, as if he’s having a conversation with whoever is inside.  As the oncoming vehicle approaches, the grizzly looks at the driver in confusion. This apex predator was enjoying his time engaging with the stopped vehicle and now his fun has been interrupted! As soon as he gathers his wits, he leaves the area and ventures into the wilderness.

Grizzly Bear Behavior

Bear attacks are uncommon, and if given the chance, one will normally leave if it becomes cognizant of you. You can significantly lower the possibility of harm during an interaction by keeping composed and acting appropriately.  The passengers inside the stopped car were smart enough to leave the windows up during their encounter. Had they not, things could’ve gone very differently. There are videos all over the internet of bears climbing into cars.  One reason they do this is that they may smell something appetizing inside. Did you know grizzly bears can smell a pack of gum in your car from 20 miles away? Perhaps these visitors were enjoying a snack and the young cub simply wanted a taste!  Because they must adapt, hunt, and protect themselves in order to survive, grizzly bears can occasionally become easily agitated when they come into touch with humans, their natural predators. It is possible to take precautions to help avoid running across these tough animals.
