In the stunning seaside city of Avalon Beach, residents and tourists spend a lot of their time near the water. A person relaxing in the sand noticed a man surfing in a rather unique way. The person surfing is a retired tandem surfer that knows how to perform a trick or two. Tandem surfing mixes the sport of surfing with gymnastic abilities and coordinated skating movements. Typically, a male and female pair is involved. The male performer pulls his female companion over and on top of his shoulders in a traditional tandem surfing session. The two try to impress by striking various acrobatic stances as they ride the wave. The man surfing in Avalon Beach decided to spend the day on the water with a different kind of surfing partner – his two dogs. A bystander caught incredible footage of the trio sliding on the waves with ease. It’s almost as if his dogs are professionals as well! A news broadcaster mentions that the surfer spends his time working with dogs with behavioral issues. While we do wish the canines were wearing life jackets, they appear to feel very comfortable in the water. So comfortable, in fact, at one point, one of the dogs jumps over the surfer to get a front-row seat. At the same time, the other pooch leaps onto the surfer’s back for a quick piggyback ride as they ride a huge wave!
A Popular Pastime
In the past, it has been proven that surfing dogs existed in the United States as early as the 1920s. Hounds that have been taught to surf on surfboards, bodyboards, skimboards, windsurf boards, or bodysurf boards are known as “dog surfers.” If dog surfing sounds like something you’d like to try, be sure to bring your camera with you! We’d love to see more footage like this. For dog surfing, use a foam board or a specific dog surfboard. The dogs can hold onto them much more effectively, and if it hits them, it won’t hurt as badly. Additionally, since a longer board is simpler to balance on, you might wish to start with one. We do want to mention that it’s best to make sure your dog can swim before attempting anything as this surfer did. It’s clear the two pups in the video have plenty of experience in the water! Who knows, maybe this trio is creating an entirely new sport for dog lovers to enjoy!
