The alligator came into the Florida home through a low window. As shown in the video by a newscaster gesturing to a boarded-up window, the entry point and style look typical of many Florida homes. “After 55 years of nursing, don’t you think I’ve seen most everything?” the homeowner, Mary Wischausen, asked. But an alligator in her kitchen was something that she had not seen in her many years living in Florida. “This 10-foot gator was having a marvelous time, sitting right in my kitchen,” she said. After hearing noises coming from her kitchen at 3:30 in the morning, she went to investigate. She discovered a large alligator lounging around on her white tile floor. His tail likely knocked over furniture in her kitchen, causing the crash that prompted her to come to check it out. She turned right around and left her surprise intruder to have free run of the kitchen while she holed up in her bedroom.
Florida Knows Gators
When Mary called for help, the incredulous 911 operator had to ask her again where the gator was. “I’m sorry, is it in your house?” he asked. “In your kitchen?” “Yes!” Mary replied. Trappers responded to remove the alligator safely. Video shows them taking the alligator out by using a trapping device around its neck to direct it. They suspect that the gator came out of the nearby water and entered her home. What makes the story even more remarkable is that the gator entered Mary’s home rather than one of the other condos closer to the water. While there, the gator made quite a mess, including spilling her red wine. “He got my red wine,” she said. “The good stuff.” The video showed the mess left behind by the gator, including knocked-over chairs, broken bottles, and, of course, the spilled wine.
